7 Ways to Get Cash Fast When Your Paycheck Is 5 Days Away
Seven battle-tested tactics to cover the gap — ranked from free (option 1) to expensive (option 7). Pick based on how much time you have.
Payday is 5 days away and rent is due tomorrow. Here are seven ways to cover the gap, ranked from least to most expensive.
1. Ask your landlord for a 5-day extension (FREE)
Landlords hate turnover far more than they hate a 5-day late payment. A polite call — "I get paid on the 15th, can I pay rent on the 16th?" — has a shockingly high success rate. Most leases give you a 5-day grace period anyway.
2. Employer payroll advance (FREE OR ~$5)
Ask HR about earned-wage access. Companies with 100+ employees increasingly offer this via DailyPay, PayActiv, or Even. You access wages you've ALREADY EARNED but haven't been paid yet. Fee is usually $0–$5.
3. Sell something on Facebook Marketplace ($50–$500, same day)
Old phone, tablet, gaming console, exercise equipment. Price it at 60% of retail and you'll get inquiries within an hour in most metro areas. Meet at a police-station parking lot for safety.
4. Cash advance app ($50–$500, minutes to hours, $1–$14 fee)
Earnin, Dave, Brigit, MoneyLion. They advance you against your next paycheck. Fee is usually a small "tip" plus optional subscription. Best combined with option 2 above if your employer doesn't offer wage access directly.
5. Credit card cash advance (up to your card limit, immediate, 29% APR + fee)
Not ideal, but instant. Interest starts accruing the day you withdraw (no grace period). Pay it back with your next paycheck to minimize damage.
6. Personal installment loan ($500–$5,000, next business day, 12–35% APR)
If the amount is larger and you'll need more than one paycheck to repay, a personal loan is dramatically cheaper than a payday loan. Same-day funding is possible with select lenders if you apply before 2 PM ET.
7. Payday loan ($100–$1,000, same day, 300–400% APR)
The nuclear option. Fast and available even with bad credit, but expensive. Only use if:
- You're 100% certain you can repay from your next paycheck
- The amount is under $500
- You've exhausted options 1–6

What to avoid
Never take a payday loan to pay off another payday loan. That's called "rolling" and it's how people end up paying $600 in fees on a $200 loan.
Never give an upfront fee to receive a loan. It's always a scam.
Never sign a loan agreement you haven't read. Real lenders give you the full disclosure — total cost, APR, payment schedule — before you sign.
The 5-day-gap playbook
Days 1–2: Try options 1, 2, and 3. Free money always wins. Day 3: Try option 4 (cash advance app). Still cheap. Day 4: Options 5 or 6, depending on amount needed. Day 5: Only if nothing above worked — option 7.
Managing money is largely about which levers you know exist. Now you know seven of them.
